Most people assume their NDIS funding just carries on, plan after plan, like one long account that never really resets. It doesn't work like that.
Every NDIS plan has its own start date and its own end date. Your funding only pays for services that happen inside that window. Once you understand that one rule, a lot of things about plan management start to make sense.
Your Funding Lives Inside Your Plan Dates
Think of each plan as its own container. Services that happen between the start and end date get paid from that plan's funding. Nothing before it. Nothing after it.
That's true whether you're on your first plan or your fifth.
It's also why the date on your plan document matters more than people expect. Not just as paperwork, but as the exact boundary your funding operates inside.
When You Get a Brand New Plan
You'll know you've got a new plan (rather than an extension of your old one) when the dates don't overlap. Your old plan will most likely end the day before your new one begins, with a clean break between the two. Here's what that means for your funding:
Funding won't carry over: Any funding left over in your old plan stays with the NDIS.
Your new plan comes with new funding: This only covers services from its start date onwards.
Services that happened in your old plan are paid from your old plan, not your new one: This gives your providers time to finalise invoices for services that happened on or before the old plan's end date, using whatever funding remains in that plan.
You can't use your new plan to cover outstanding invoices from your old plan: If there wasn't enough funding left in the old plan to cover an invoice, you can ask us to submit a Payment Enquiry to the NDIS on your behalf. It's then up to the NDIS whether they approve it.
When Your Plan Gets Extended Instead
Sometimes the NDIS doesn't give you a new plan. They extend your current one. You might hear this called a continuation, a rollover or an extension. They all mean the same thing.
You can tell this has happened because your start date stays exactly the same. Only the end date moves out.
To carry you through that extra time, the NDIS adds more funding on top of what you already had. Nothing you'd built up gets lost. It just gets added to.
If you were short on funding for an invoice before the extension came through, this is actually good news. Because the service happened within what's technically still the same plan, we can pay that outstanding invoice using the newly topped up funding.
If Your Plan's Extended, You Might Not Get a New Copy
If your plan gets extended, the NDIS doesn't always send you a fresh document. It's completely fine to hold onto the original copy you received when the plan began.
The only time you'd need to request an updated copy is if something has genuinely changed within the plan, like the NDIS adding funding for a new support you didn't have before.
A Quick Way to Tell the Difference
If the two plans sit side by side with no overlap, you've got a new plan.
If the end date has simply moved further out while everything else stayed the same, you've got an extension.
One Thing That Surprises Almost Everyone
The NDIS doesn't automatically send your plan manager a copy of your plan. Not when it's new and not when it's extended. That means we're relying on you to share it with us.
Sharing your plan the moment you get it means we can manage your funding accurately from day one, rather than catching up later.
You don't need to share it with every provider you work with, but it's safe to share with us. We're paid a flat rate for plan management, regardless of what's in your plan. Our only interest is managing it properly for you.
How to Share Your Plan with Us
Make sure you’ve got a digital copy of your plan
You can download it from your NDIS Participant Portal, or you can call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 and ask them to send a copy to your plan manager's email: planmanagement@providerchoice.com.au.
Upload it to your Dashboard
- Log into your Dashboard.
- Click Settings from the menu.
- Select Plans from the top menu.
- Upload a digital copy of your plan.
If the Dashboard won't accept your file (this sometimes happens with scanned copies), just email a copy to planmanagement@providerchoice.com.au and we'll take it from there.
Not Sure Which Applies to You?
If you've just received something from the NDIS and you're not sure whether it's a new plan or an extension, you don't need to work it out alone.
Book a Guru session and we'll walk through it with you, step by step, so you know exactly what's happening with your funding and what to do next.
