Raising the Standard: Mandatory Registration for SIL and Platform Providers

Safety matters, especially when it comes to the people who support us in our homes and daily lives.

Following the independent review into the NDIS, the government has confirmed a major step forward for safety across the sector. From 1 July 2026, Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers and digital platform providers will need to be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

This change strengthens trust. It ensures the providers delivering some of the most essential supports, like housing and worker matching, meet the standards our community expects.

Who is this for?

Many providers are already registered. The new requirement focuses on two groups that have been able to operate without it:

  • Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers
Teams that offer supervision and support with daily tasks such as cooking, personal care or household routines for people with higher support needs.
  • Digital platform providers
Websites and apps that help people find and connect with support workers.

Why the changes?

It comes down to accountability and consistency.

Registration means these providers will undergo independent audits, worker screening checks and regular assessments. Everyone using the NDIS should have confidence that the people coming into their homes meet clear, reliable standards.

As NDIS Minister Jenny McAllister said, the aim is a stronger, safer NDIS for everyone.

Protecting Choice and Control

Choice is at the heart of the NDIS.

This change does not apply to every provider. It applies only to SIL and digital platform services, where the risks are higher and the supports are more personal.

The goal isn’t to limit options. It’s to make sure every option is safe, trustworthy and aligned with the quality people deserve.

Navigating change together

The new rules will come into effect in mid-2026, giving unregistered providers time to complete their registration. Nothing changes today.

We’ll continue to keep you informed of future updates and announcements,  so you always know what’s changing and what it means for you.
