What Does an NDIS Support Worker Do? Costs, Checks & What to Ask

Something our Gurus see often in budgeting sessions is funding that's never quite been used. Usually it's because the person wasn't sure what a Support Worker actually does or whether one would suit them.

A Support Worker can make everyday life easier in lots of practical ways, so we wanted to lay it out clearly. Here's what they can help with, how pricing works and what to check so you find the right fit.

What Does an NDIS Support Worker Do?

A Support Worker helps with the everyday tasks and activities that matter to you. What they do depends on your goals and what's in your plan.

Common examples include:

  • Personal care: showering, dressing and grooming.
  • Meals: cooking, meal planning and help with eating.
  • Household tasks: light cleaning, laundry and tidying up.
  • Getting where you need to be: appointments, work or social outings.
  • Being alongside you: at appointments, shopping trips or community events.
  • Building everyday skills: like budgeting or using public transport.

Support Worker funding usually comes from the Core budget in your plan, so it's worth checking what you already have before you look elsewhere.

How Much Does an NDIS Support Worker Cost?

The cost depends on the type of support, the day and the time. Your Plan Manager, Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can help you work out what applies to your plan.

Price limits are set in the NDIS Pricing Schedule. They're the maximum a provider can charge for a support, not a fixed price. That means you can ask a provider for a lower hourly rate. If they agree, your funding stretches further.

A few things worth weighing up:

  • Agency Support Workers are less likely to negotiate on price, but they can usually cover a shift if your regular worker is unavailable.
  • Independent Support Workers are often open to a lower rate, but they're less likely to have a backup if they can't make it.

If a Support Worker quotes above the price limit, talk to your Plan Manager before you agree to anything.

What Should You Check Before a Support Worker Starts?

It's completely normal to ask questions before someone starts. An experienced Support Worker expects them and answers without hesitation.

  • NDIS Worker Screening clearance. This is required for many workers with registered providers and it's a good idea to ask anyone for it.
  • National Police Check. Worth asking about, especially if they don't have a Worker Screening clearance.
  • Training or qualifications. Especially important for higher intensity support.
  • Insurance. Check they're covered if they work independently.

Every Support Worker, registered or not, must follow the NDIS Code of Conduct.

Finding the Right Person

It can take a few tries, but finding the right person often makes a real difference to your day-to-day life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I negotiate a Support Worker's hourly rate?
Yes. NDIS price limits are a maximum, not a set price. You can agree a lower rate with a provider, which means your funding goes further.

What part of my NDIS plan pays for a Support Worker?
Support Worker funding usually comes from your Core budget. Your Plan Manager can help you check how much you have available.

Should I choose an agency or an independent Support Worker?
It depends on what matters most to you. Agencies can usually cover shifts if your regular worker is away, while independent Support Workers are often more flexible on price.

Can I change Support Workers if it's not working out?
Yes. Talk to the provider first, as many issues can be resolved. If you decide to move on, check your service agreement for any notice period.
