At Provider Choice, we know there’s a particular kind of joy that comes from watching someone try something new and realise they can do it.
We saw plenty of that when we attended the grand opening of Lolly Jar Circus' new Welland location, a morning full of balloon animals, balance beams and a few brave first attempts.
Lolly Jar Circus has been running inclusive classes from venues in North Adelaide and Elizabeth East site for 13 years. This new, dedicated space at Welland allows classes to be held every day, enabling even more South Australians to get involved.
As South Australia's only fully inclusive social circus, they've built something genuinely rare, a place where circus arts become a way for people of all abilities to connect, build confidence and be part of a community.
We couldn't resist getting involved ourselves, including a wobbly go on the balance beam! It was a good reminder that trying something new can feel daunting at first, but with the right encouragement, confidence builds fast.
Why Community Participation Matters
Finding the right community activity can make a meaningful difference. For many participants, it's where confidence, friendships and independence take shape.
The right environment makes all the difference. When people feel genuinely welcome, they can take part at their own pace and get real value from the experience.
What Makes Lolly Jar Circus Unique
Lolly Jar Circus is a South Australian not-for-profit that believes circus should be accessible to everyone.
Through balancing, juggling, movement and creative play, participants are encouraged to try new things, work through challenges and celebrate their own progress.
Circus activities can help participants to develop:
- Coordination and body awareness.
- Confidence when trying new challenges.
- Teamwork and communication.
- Creativity and self expression.
The new Welland space carries that same spirit. It's a place where every participant is included, supported and encouraged to participate.
Seeing Inclusion In Action
The energy at the grand opening said everything you need to know about what Lolly Jar Circus has built. Participants of all ages and abilities embraced the experience, supported each other and celebrated each other's wins. It was the kind of atmosphere that makes room for everyone to take part at their own pace, no pressure, no comparison.
Families and carers spent the morning together while participants explored the activities while a balloon artist kept the fun going with colourful creations that had everyone smiling. Small moments like that add up to something bigger, a space where people genuinely feel like they belong.

Tips For Choosing An Inclusive Community Activity
If you're an NDIS participant looking for the right community activity, a few things can help narrow the search:
- Start with what you enjoy: Choose something that matches your interests or something you've always wanted to try.
- Set a goal: Think about what you'd like to get out of it, whether that's a new skill or new friendships.
- Find an inclusive group: Look for an environment where everyone is genuinely encouraged to take part.
- Check accessibility: Make sure the activity and the space suit your individual needs.
Celebrating Organisations That Create Belonging
