NDIS Replacement Supports Explained

At Provider Choice, we know the NDIS can feel complex, especially when you’re trying to understand what you can and can’t use your funding for. Replacement supports are one of those areas that can sound confusing at first, but when explained simply, they can offer more flexibility and choice in how your plan supports your everyday life.

What is a replacement support?

Replacement supports let you swap an existing NDIS-funded support for a different product or service that delivers the same or better outcomes.

They can include services, items or equipment that aren’t usually funded by the NDIS but are clearly disability-related and help you achieve your goals.

A replacement support must:

  • Relate to your disability support needs
  • Replace an existing NDIS support (not be an extra)
  • Provide the same or better outcomes
  • Cost the same or less than the support it replaces

Examples can include household items and other items like smart watches, tablets or smartphones and apps designed for accessibility or communication. If a support isn’t within this group, you won’t be able to apply for it.

How do I apply?

You’ll need to apply for approval through the NDIS. No extra assessments or reports are required, just a clear explanation of what you’re requesting and how it meets the criteria.

You can apply:

  • Online via the NDIS replacement support form
  • By email: enquiries@ndis.gov.au
  • By phone: 1800 800 110

What to include in your application:

  • What the replacement support is and how much it costs (include a quote if possible)
  • Which NDIS support you want to replace
  • How it will help you (for example, independence or community participation)
  • Why it works the same or better than the current support

The NDIS will review your request and contact you if they need more information.

If your application isn’t approved

The NDIS will notify you by phone and in writing. You can’t request a review and can’t apply for the same replacement support again for 12 months, unless your circumstances change and your plan is reassessed.

You can continue using the supports already in your plan and may apply for a different replacement support at any time.

If your application is approved

Approval lasts for the length of your current plan. You can purchase the support once approved and follow the claiming instructions in your confirmation letter.

You’ll need to share the approval with your provider (and if applicable your plan manager) along with a tax invoice or receipt.
